ST. THOMAS — The Bovoni Landfill, a key waste management site in St. Thomas, is slated to reopen today at noon following a fire incident. The V.I. Management Authority made the announcement this morning at 11:14, much to the relief of the community that had been dealing with a build-up of trash due to the landfill's temporary closure.

To mitigate the accumulated waste, WMA said it will be opening the landfill for private haulers from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Sunday. The move is seen as a significant step in restoring normal waste management operations, which have been hampered since the fire broke out in the landfill's scrap metal area.

In a statement, the authority said, "We expect normal operations to resume at the Bovoni Landfill no later than Tuesday, July 11, 2023." The commitment signals that the situation is now under control and the authority is keen on minimizing any further inconvenience to the community.

WMA expressed its gratitude towards the V.I. Fire Department, the V.I. Port Authority, and the government of the Virgin Islands for their assistance in extinguishing the fire. The authority also conveyed its apologies to the community for the inconvenience caused by the incident, thanking residents for their patience during this challenging period.

The WMA continues to encourage the community to report any emergencies, illegal dumping, sewage overflow, or service interruption by calling 844-WMA-USVI (844-962-8784). For additional information on the reopening of the landfill and other related services, the public is urged to contact the Division of Education and Communications Management at 340-513-4171 or send an email to [email protected].
