Fire at Anguilla Landfill By. ERNICE GILBERT/VI CONSORTIUM

The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority has advised the community that the Anguilla Landfill on St. Croix will be closed to the public today, due to continued fire suppression activities taking place at the site.

WMA said solid waste haulers are advised that bin site and house-to-house refuse will be accepted at the Transfer Station while the top of the landfill will remain closed to minimize disruption to fire suppression activities.

The fire was reported at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, WMA said. The Virgin Islands Fire Service, WMA contractors and personnel continue to work to suppress the fire which is located on the southeast corner of the landfill, according to the release.

The authority said it will continue to provide updates on this situation. Residents with respiratory disorders/conditions should take precautions to minimize their exposure to smoke as wind directions change.

WMA apologized for the inconvenience and would like to thank the community for their continued patience and cooperation.
