Students of the Eulalie Rivera K-8 School on St. Croix are all expected to return to school on Monday, as repairs on modular classrooms have been completed, according to the V.I. Dept. of Education.

Last week, several classes housed in modular units were shifted to home instruction a day after schools opened across the territory, leading to widespread criticism from the community. The department said the action was taken due to pending maintenance issues that were not addressed during the months-long summer break.

The announcement of the return to in-person classes for the affected students was made on Sunday afternoon. The department stated that it had contracted a vendor to deep clean and sanitize all modular classrooms, including desks, chairs, and walls.

The department also conducted testing and remediation for mold, which included the removal of the existing HVAC and ducting system. Ceiling tiles in all nine classrooms were replaced with new ones, and each classroom was equipped with a split air conditioning unit. The maintenance team also conducted roof repairs and applied sealant to the modular units.

With the resumption of in-person classes at Eulalie Rivera, the department said that all schools are now opened as planned.
