V.I. Department of Education announces alternative learning measures as school remains closed
In response to the ongoing State of Emergency caused by the fire at the Bovoni Landfill, Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School (BCB) will remain closed for an indefinite period. The V.I. Department of Education (VIDE) is prioritizing the health and safety of its students, faculty, and staff and has announced the distribution of devices and instructional packets for alternative learning measures.
Parents and guardians can pick up devices and instructional packets on Thursday, September 21, 2023, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. An alternative pickup date has been set for Friday, September 22, 2023, within the same time frame. These are the only designated pickup dates. If parents are unable to pick up on these dates, they should contact the school via email at [email protected] for further assistance.
Due to concerns about poor air quality resulting from the landfill fire, parents are strongly encouraged to collect the learning materials within the specified time slots.
Device Collection Requirements
- Only parents, guardians, or individuals listed in PowerSchool are authorized to collect devices.
- Completion of the District Technology Form is mandatory before receiving a device.
- Devices should not be picked up if they are not needed.
- Students who already have devices should log on to Microsoft Teams.
Instructional Packets
Instructional packets will include pre-prepared assignments and previously covered content. These assignments will date back to Monday, September 18, 2023, and will be due the following week.
Virtual Learning and Communication
Teachers will communicate with students through Microsoft Teams and email once devices have been distributed. A modified asynchronous learning schedule will commence on Monday, September 25, 2023.
Faculty and staff will continue to fulfill their regular duties, which include updating grades, contacting parents and students, meeting with Team Supervisors, and logging entries into PowerSchool.
D.O.E. extended its gratitude to the V.I. Fire Emergency Management Services and other agencies for their efforts to extinguish the fire, which began on Thursday, September 14, 2023.
Parents and guardians are requested to extend their cooperation and understanding as the school navigates through these challenging circumstances.
