The St. Croix Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is set to conduct its annual “Mae Louise C. Williams Feed the Less Fortunate” Project on Saturday, January 13.
This service initiative, part of the sorority's longstanding commitment to the community, will involve distributing free hot meals to the homeless and less fortunate in St. Croix, according to a release issued Thursday. The meals, funded by donations from the Community Methodist Church, individual supporters, and chapter members, will be served at two locations: the Catholic Charities parking lot in Christiansted and the Frederiksted Health Care parking lot in Frederiksted.
This project, started in 2001, aims to serve 111 persons this year, symbolizing the 111 years of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's service. The event has been renamed in honor of the late Mae C. Louise Williams, a charter member of the chapter, acknowledging her significant contributions.
Petra Victor, the chapter president, emphasized the importance of this annual project to assist those often without access to hot meals. "St. Croix Alumnae Chapter adopted this annual project in a continuous effort to help those in need, who often go hungry or without a hot meal for many days," she said. "We take this initiative very seriously and we try to serve as many people as possible."
This initiative is part of the sorority's Founders Day ceremonies, commemorating its establishment in 1913 at Howard University. The sorority, known for its public service, has grown into an international organization with over 250,000 members.
