ST. THOMAS — As the sun set on the Charlotte Amalie waterfront on Thursday, the 90 palms lining the newly opened Veterans Drive Waterfront Park began to twinkle with more than 10,000 solar operated fairy lights, Oriental Bank, a partner in the lighting effort, said Friday via release.
The “Deck the Palms” Veterans Drive waterfront spectacle is a gift to the community from Government House and Oriental who engineered and funded the solar light display aided by the Department of Public Works.
Announced at the Havensight Toy Giveaway on Thursday, Governor Albert Bryan, Jr. said “As we helped Santa distribute toys to our children on St. Thomas, the Veterans Drive holiday lights are our “holiday card” to the rest of our community as well as visitors to our islands. The display also heralds many future celebrations with completion of Phase 1 and the start of Phase 2 of the 4-lane roadway.”
According to the release, Oriental bank co-sponsored the holiday extravaganza. Oriental USVI Regional Manager, Attallah Bertrand-Rogers, explained, “The Veterans Drive waterfront has become a wonderful gathering and exercising promenade for St. Thomas. We wanted to create a little holiday magic for our community to lift spirits and make the season bright.”
The light wrapped palms extend from Yacht Haven Grande to the Federal Building on the St. Thomas waterfront. Hopefully a new tradition for years to come.
