The deceased was identified by next of kin as David Pryce, according to V.I. Police Department Director of Communications Glen Dratte.

DPNR said the incident occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 13. Emergency dispatch received a 911 call reporting the incident, and initial reports indicated that bystanders saw an individual in the water, recovered him and transported him to the event’s designated staging area.

Fire and Emergency Medical Services personnel immediately began life-saving measures when they arrived. Mr. Pryce was subsequently transported to Juan F. Luis Hospital for further medical treatment, but despite the efforts of first responders and hospital personnel, he later died from his injuries.

Authorities have not yet disclosed what led to Mr. Pryce entering the water or provided further details about the vessel involved. DPNR said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under review as officials continue gathering information about the events leading up to the accident.

The department used the incident to remind boaters of the importance of safe vessel operation, particularly during organized marine events when increased traffic may be present. DPNR said its Division of Environmental Enforcement continues to patrol territorial waters and enforce boating laws covering vessel operation, navigation, safety equipment and prudent boating practices.
