Cramer Park Beach on St. Croix By. Unknown

The Department of Planning and Natural Resources on Friday issued its weekly beach advisory that gives guidance on the beaches residents and visitors to the territory should feel safe swimming and fishing in.

This weekend, Cramer Park on St. Croix, and Frank Bay and Great Cruz Bay in St. John were deemed unsafe because they failed the water quality test. D.P.N.R. determined that the enterococci bacteria at the aforementioned beaches exceeded the established threshold.

The department tested 34 beaches. Below, the safe ones, per island:

St. Croix

  • Stony Ground
  • Pelican Cove
  • Chenay Bay
  • Dorsch Beach
  • Princess
  • New Fort Beach
  • Frederiksted Public Beach
  • Protestant Cay
  • Grapetree
  • Rainbow
  • Buccaneer
  • Cane Bay
  • Shoy’s

  • Coki Point
  • Bluebeard’s

 St. John

  • Cruz Bay
  • Oppenheimer
  • Johnson Bay

Half Penny on St. Croix and Johnson Bay on St. John were not tested, therefore their water quality was unknown as of Friday.

D.P.N.R. said all persons should also be aware that storm water runoff may also contain contaminants or pollutants harmful to human health and therefore all persons should avoid areas of storm water runoff (i.e. guts, puddles, and drainage basins) or if any area appears discolored or has foul odors. The department said it will continue to monitor the impacted areas and waters.

For additional information regarding water quality call the Division of Environmental Protection at 773-1082 in St. Croix or 774-3320 in St. Thomas.
