ST. CROIX — St. Croix Central High School closed on Monday due to the reoccurrence of a gaseous odor on the campus, the Department of Education said Monday afternoon. The school was closed from Wednesday last week because of the odor, and reopened today.
D.O.E. told the Consortium Sunday night that it had identified clogged sewer lines as the cause of the unpleasant and potentially harmful smell. But the department appears to have missed the mark.
The department said it would provide further details today.
Parents began picking up students at 12:45 p.m. School buses were dispatched to the school to begin transporting students at 1:30 p.m. to their regular drop-off locations. D.O.E. said it has partnered with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources, Waste Management, Department of Health-Div. of Environmental Health and VITEMA to rectify the issue.
The odor, decades old, has been a reoccurring problem that has eluded a number of administrations.
