Governor Albert Bryan has issued a proclamation commemorating “Meatless Day in the Virgin Islands,” Government House has announced. The observance is practiced throughout the East Indian diaspora around the world in honor ofSadhu T.L. Vaswani, a noted educator, spiritual leader and proponent of Mahatma Ghandi’s Non-Cooperation Movement.
Sadhu T.L. Vaswani promoted the principle of reverence for all life, and he is considered by people around the world as the living embodiment of unconditional love. In 1986, Dada J.P. Vaswani created “Meatless Day” to be observed on the birthday of Sadhu T.L. Vaswani to honor his philosophy and advocacy of vegetarianism, according to the release.
Gov't House said because the annual observance falls this year on Thanksgiving Day, Mr. Bryan is asking Virgin Islanders to observe “Meatless Day” on Wednesday, November 24, in the spirit of unity, brotherhood, fellowship and compassion.
“All Virgin Islanders should be called upon to join in this one-day “Pledge to Be Veg” as a demonstration of unity and harmony for all mankind as 2021 has been a difficult year with the COVID-19 Pandemic for all of us, and it has never been more pressing than now that we all come together,” Governor Bryan wrote, according to Gov't House.
