Government of the Virgin Islands employees will receive Christmas Eve off this year, following an executive order issued by Governor Albert Bryan Jr., a move that mirrors recent action taken at the federal level by President Donald Trump granting federal employees additional time off around the Christmas holiday.

The governor confirmed the decision to The Consortium, stating that the executive order granting Dec. 24, 2025, off for local government employees will be issued today. The action aligns the territorial government’s holiday schedule with a federal executive order signed by President Trump on Dec. 18, which provides for the closure of executive departments and agencies of the federal government on both Christmas Eve and the day following Christmas.

Locally, under Title 1 V.I.C. § 171, legal holidays for the season already include Christmas Day on Thursday, December 25, Christmas Second Day on Friday, December 26, New Year’s Day on Thursday, January 1, 2026; and Three Kings Day on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

Taken together, the actions by both the White House and Government House establish Dec. 24, 2025, as a day off for a broad swath of public-sector employees, with limited exceptions for essential services, as the territory and the nation observe the Christmas holiday.
