The V.I. Police Department is encouraging Virgin Islanders with firearms to submit the weapons to locations designated by the department in St. Thomas and St. Croix, and in return receive cash for the weapons with no questions asked.

Officially called the Cash For Guns, Gun Buyback Anti-Crime Initiative, it is being carried out by the V.I.P.D. in collaboration with the offices of Senators Franklin Johnson and Dwayne DeGraff.

"The VIPD [is] asking all residents to bring their firearms to the locations and we will give you cash at a fair market value for your guns," reads a quote from the release.

It further states, "Bring in your firearms, ammunition and walk away with cold, hard cash no questions asked, no ID required."

The Police Department said that over the next two weeks, four events will be held: two on St. Croix and two on St. Thomas. In St. Thomas, the events will be held on Feb. 9th and 19th at the Omar Brown Fire Station in Charlotte Amalie from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. On St. Croix, the events are scheduled for Feb. 12th and 16th at the Agricultural Fairgrounds (eastern side) from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

For more information, call the V.I.P.D. on St. Thomas at 340-774-2211, on St. Croix at 340-778-2211, or reach the department's Public Relations Office at 340 642-9310.
