ST. THOMAS — The V.I. Police Department is investigating the discovery of human remains in Fortuna, St. Thomas, after a call to central dispatch on Wednesday afternoon.
According to the VIPD’s Criminal Investigation Bureau, at approximately 3:48 p.m. on Tuesday, police were notified of a possible body wrapped in garbage bags in the Fortuna area. Responding officers searched the surrounding location and confirmed finding a bag containing human remains.
Emergency Medical Technicians arrived on the scene and, at about 4:57 p.m., determined that the individual had no vital signs. At this stage, the identity and gender of the deceased remain unknown. An autopsy will be conducted to confirm both identity and cause of death.
The VIPD’s Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation.
