The V.I. Bureau of Motor Vehicles is alerting the public to a phishing scam involving text messages falsely claiming to be from the agency. According to BMV Director Barbara Jackson-McIntosh, messages with the subject line "Final Notice: Enforcement Penalties Beginning June 3" are being circulated in an attempt to trick residents into providing personal or financial information.

“These messages are a scam and should not be opened or acted upon,” emphasized McIntosh. She clarified that the BMV does not send unsolicited messages containing payment links or threaten enforcement through such channels.

The bureau also reminded residents of the following:

  • The correct name of the agency is BMV (Bureau of Motor Vehicles) — not DMV, which the scam message incorrectly uses.

  • The BMV will never ask for sensitive information via text message.

  • If you receive a suspicious message, do not click any links or provide personal information.

Residents who have concerns about their BMV accounts or who receive questionable communications are urged to contact the agency directly through official channels. The BMV can be reached by phone at 340-774-4268, 340-713-4268, or 340-776-6262, or online at bmv.vi.gov.

McIntosh apologized for any inconvenience the fraudulent activity may have caused and reiterated the agency’s commitment to protecting the public from digital threats.
