ST. CROIX — The V.I. Bureau of Motor Vehicles has announced a temporary waiver of late fees for vehicle registration renewals completed online, a move officials say is intended to encourage greater use of digital services while easing in-office congestion.
According to a notice issued by the BMV on December 17, all late fees will be waived from December 18 through February 16, 2026, but only for customers who renew their vehicle registrations through the bureau’s online system. The waiver does not apply to in-person transactions.
The bureau said the decision is part of its ongoing effort to improve customer convenience, reduce wait times at physical offices, and promote the use of online services. Officials described the online renewal system as a fast, secure, and efficient option for vehicle owners seeking to complete transactions without visiting a BMV office.
BMV Director Barbara Jackson-McIntosh emphasized that the initiative is aimed at making compliance easier for residents while modernizing how services are delivered.
“We want to make it as easy as possible for customers to stay current with their vehicle registrations,” Jackson-McIntosh said. “By waiving late fees for online renewals, we are giving residents an incentive to use our digital services, avoid long lines, and manage their transactions on their own time from anywhere.”
The bureau also reminded residents that vehicle registrations may be renewed up to three months in advance, a provision intended to help drivers avoid last-minute delays and remain in compliance with registration requirements.
BMV officials encouraged residents to take advantage of the late-fee waiver during the two-month window and to utilize the online system for its convenience and efficiency. Customers who need assistance with online renewals were advised to contact the BMV Customer Service Team.
The waiver applies exclusively to online renewals during the specified period, and standard late fees will resume once the waiver expires on February 16, 2026.
