The V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue has announced the launch of VI Quick File, a new online tax filing portal designed to streamline the tax submission process for residents of the territory. The portal will allow taxpayers to electronically submit their 2024 Individual Income Tax Returns (Form 1040 or Form 1040SR) from anywhere at any time, ahead of the April 15, 2025, filing deadline.

BIR introduced the initiative, stressing that VI Quick File aims to reduce long lines at tax offices and provide greater convenience for taxpayers. The new system enables users to:

  • Upload completed tax returns in PDF format
  • File Form 4868 to request an automatic extension until the April 15 deadline
  • Make electronic payments for any taxes owed

To access the VI Quick File system, taxpayers must request a registration PIN by emailing [email protected]. (Note: Social Security numbers should not be included in the email request.) Once the PIN is received, users can complete registration at income-tax.bir.vi.gov.

The deadline to register for VI Quick File is 8:00 p.m. on April 15, 2025.

BIR reminded taxpayers that this online system is independent of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and is specifically for bona fide residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Filing federal tax returns with the IRS instead of the VI BIR is a violation of the law, and those who wrongfully file with the IRS and receive refunds will be required to repay those funds, including penalties and interest, BIR said.

Taxpayers are strongly advised not to upload handwritten tax returns, as only digital PDF documents will be accepted through the online system.

For any questions or technical support regarding VI Quick File, residents can contact BIR’s Computer Operations via email at [email protected] or by phone at (340) 715-1040.
