The application window for scholarships from the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands is now open as of today, according to a press release from the foundation.

The scholarships are available to students who are current seniors or graduates of a high school in the U.S. Virgin Islands, who have either applied for or are enrolled in full-time undergraduate or graduate programs from accredited institutions.

Virgin Islanders who matriculated from an institution outside the territory will be considered if they can prove that they transferred schools due to Hurricanes Irma and Maria, or because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Over twenty scholarships for technical, undergraduate and graduate programs are available, including the Alexander A. Farrelly Scholarship which provides two students with $2,500 each towards obtaining degrees in education, or health sciences. The Anna Green Walsh Scholar Award provides the same amount of money to four first-generation tertiary students, while the Blackhall Family Scholarship gives two $2,500 scholarships to high-school seniors who will enroll in technical programs — plumbing, electrical, automotive, welding, metalwork, masonry, locksmithing, or other construction-related fields. The Blackhall Family Scholarship also awards $2,500 to one high-school senior wishing to pursue training in secretarial, paralegal, court reporting, or related fields.

The CAHS Class of 1951 award will grant $2,500 to a student with financial need who is graduating from their alma mater — the Charlotte Amalie High School, and pursuing undergraduate studies.

The Coral World Scholarship is for college students in their sophomore, junior or senior years. It awards $2,500 to an eligible student who is in a 4-year undergraduate program, preferably for marine biology or environmental science, while the David O’Connell  Accounting Scholarship gives the same amount to a student pursuing an accounting degree.

The CFVI scholarship program came about when a long-time resident of St. Thomas, who retired to the USVI from New York after working with a native Virgin Islander, bequeathed her estate to be used to fund the educational development of young residents of the territory. The initial 1996 bequest from Anna Green Walsh has, over the years, awarded over $3.7 million in scholarships. The 2022 cycle provided over $162,000 to 57 Virgin Islanders pursuing higher education.

Interested applicants can access the full list of scholarships from the CFVI website, and are expected to supply information such as their school transcripts, a student aid report, and their most recent tax return which shows their adjusted gross income, along with their completed application.

Applicants will have approximately two months to prepare their packages for submission, as the application window will close on May 15, 2023.
