ST. CROIX — After remaining closed through the weekend as emergency crews battled a fire at the Anguilla Landfill, the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority announced Sunday that the facility is scheduled to reopen Monday, March 9, at 10:00 a.m.
The reopening follows days of emergency response after an active fire broke out at the landfill on Friday, prompting authorities to shut down the facility and keep residents and commercial haulers away while suppression efforts continued. As of Sunday morning, the Waste Management Authority had said the fire had been significantly reduced, but warned that conditions inside the landfill were still unstable and unsafe for public access, requiring the site to remain closed until further notice.
By later Sunday, however, WMA advised the public that the Anguilla Landfill would resume operations on Monday morning. In its latest notice, the authority said residents and haulers should proceed with caution when accessing the facility.
The closure was extended over the weekend to protect residents, commercial haulers, staff, and contractors while emergency personnel and Waste Management Authority operations crews continued working to fully extinguish the fire and manage unsafe conditions. Authorities had warned that unauthorized entry during the closure posed a risk to individuals and could interfere with emergency operations.
The agency said fire suppression efforts had been ongoing throughout the weekend, with emergency personnel working through Sunday to bring the situation under control.
In announcing Monday’s reopening, the authority apologized for the inconvenience caused during the closure and thanked the community for its patience, cooperation, and understanding throughout the incident.
