ST. CROIX — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority announced Thursday that an active fire at the Anguilla Landfill had prompted the temporary closure of the facility.

Firefighters and WMA personnel were working expeditiously to bring the fire under control, the authority said. Waste Management advised the public and all haulers that landfill operations have been temporarily suspended.  Haulers are asked to hold waste until normal operating hours resume.

Residents with respiratory disorders/conditions should take precautions to minimize their exposure to smoke as wind directions change, WMA said. The authority said it will continue to provide updates regarding changes that may affect public health, the environment and haulers utilizing the Landfill.

Waste Management apologized for inconveniences caused by the fire.
