Owners of abandoned, derelict and hazardous vehicles tagged by the Government of the Virgin Islands have 72 hours from the date a notice is placed on their vehicle to correct the violation or potentially face liens, fines and additional fees, according to Government House.
The administration announced Wednesday that the Office of the Governor, through the Office of the Administrator, is continuing efforts to remove abandoned vehicles throughout the territory. The latest action represents the third list of vehicles that have been tagged under the initiative.
Government House said responsibility for removing an abandoned vehicle rests with its last registered owner. Vehicles that are tagged are placed on an official listing identifying their recorded owners, whose names will also be published.
If a violation is not corrected within the 72-hour period, the administration said the owner may be subject to fines and additional fees, while liens may be placed against the last recorded owner through the Virgin Islands Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Residents whose names appear on the current listing are being asked to contact the Office of the Administrator at 340-693-4316 or 340-774-0001 for assistance.
Government House also issued a correction and retraction involving one vehicle that had been improperly included on the abandoned vehicle list because of an administrative error.
The administration identified the vehicle as a gray Toyota Corolla with license plate H 528, recorded to Paula N. Matthew and Daphine V. Matthew. Government House said the vehicle had been tagged but was subsequently cleared before publication of the list and therefore should not have appeared on the notice.
“The vehicle has satisfied all program requirements and should not have appeared on the notice,” Government House stated, apologizing for any inconvenience caused.
