AARP in The Virgin Islands is joining forces with AARP Puerto Rico to present a virtual series focusing on fraud prevention awareness, according to a release from the organization.
The series aims to educate residents of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on safeguarding themselves and their families from fraud and scams, particularly in the wake of disasters, during the holiday season, and to identify financial exploitation of elders.
The initial session, titled "Fraud in the Aftermath of a Disaster," is slated to take place on Zoom on Friday, August 31, 2023, at 5:30 pm Virgin Islands time. A Spanish-language version of the session will be streamed on the AARP in Puerto Rico Facebook page and will include presentations from the Department of Justice Criminal Division - National Center for Disaster Fraud (NCDF), FEMA Caribbean Region Disaster Fraud Division, VI Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA), and the Puerto Rico Emergency Management Agency (PREMA).
To register, individuals should sign in to their AARP.org account or create one. AARP membership is not a requirement for registration, which is free of charge. The sessions are accessible to the public and are open to individuals who are 18 years of age or older. Following the initial session, two more are scheduled for Thursday, October 26, and Monday and Tuesday, December 11 and 12, 2023.
Troy de Chabert-Schuster, the State Director of AARP-VI, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration with AARP Puerto Rico. He emphasized the importance of equipping people with the necessary information to protect themselves and their families from fraudulent activities.
