ST. CROIX - AARP in The Virgin Islands, in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts, will offer a series of virtual storytelling events.
The Project – Our Voices Story Telling, is led by the VI Council on the Arts. The events will be livestreamed via the AARP Virgin Islands Facebook Page as a Facebook Live event beginning Tuesday, May 5th and every Tuesday, thereafter, for five weeks; May 12th, 19th, 26th, and June 2nd at 6:00 pm each day. The events will feature traditional folklore told by five recognized storytellers from the Virgin Islands, telling stories of yester-year.
As the outbreak of the Coronavirus forced AARP to suspend all in person events, it began working on ways to offer virtual events to the public. This has resulted in the formation of new relationships, including this newly formed relationship between AARP VI and the VI Council on the Arts.
Storytelling is an integral part of Virgin Islands culture with strong ties to our ancestry on the continent of Africa. They evoke happiness, excitement, and healing. AARP VI and the VI Council on the Arts hopes to provide an outlet for individuals to discover and experience the power of storytelling, partake in this colorful, cultural expression and divert their attention from the anxieties of the present time. This is also a great way to involve children and provide them entertainment.
