Senator Milton Potter is challenging home gardeners to grow eggplant for the 3rd annual Plant-a-Seed Challenge.
Each year, the senator’s office chooses one crop, provides soil and seeds to participants, and then judges their output according to data recorded in a gardening journal that gardeners upload to the senator’s website. Contestants also receive points for using creative materials, or by choosing to recycle/reuse material for their gardening project.
There are four different age categories: adults 18+, and children 14-17, 11-13, and 5-10. Each contestant must use the soil and seeds provided to grow their eggplants, and must record in their journals key progress data, including measuring the height of their plants in 4-week increments, the total number and weight of the eggplants produced, and the estimated value of their crop if sold in stores, among other information.
All contestants will receive a certificate of participation as well as a coupon redeemable at Armstrong Ice Cream, with additional prizes going to winners in each age category.
“Once again, I am challenging Virgin Islanders to have fun planting seeds and starting home gardens with their families,” said Mr. Potter.
Participants will be supported throughout the challenge via a WhatsApp group chat through which they can receive suggestions and guidance to assist their gardening efforts.
