Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson

The District Court of the Virgin Islands has announced an upcoming visit by Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson, scheduled for February 2025. The visit is being hosted by Chief Judge Robert A. Molloy and District Judge Wilma A. Lewis, and it represents a notable occasion for the territory.

Chief Judge Molloy expressed his enthusiasm for the visit, stating, “It is an incredible honor to facilitate Justice Jackson’s visit and to welcome her to our beautiful Virgin Islands.” Judge Lewis added, “We are extremely excited to have the great privilege of hosting Justice Jackson and introducing her to various segments of our community.”

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the first African-American woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, assumed her position on June 30, 2022, following her nomination by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. She succeeded Associate Justice Stephen Breyer, under whom she previously clerked. Her career includes serving as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia from 2013 to 2021 and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 2021 to 2022.

In addition to her judicial roles, Justice Jackson has a notable background as a federal clerk, private practice attorney, and assistant federal public defender in Washington, D.C. She also served as a Vice Chair and Commissioner on the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Notably, she is the first former public defender to serve on the Supreme Court. 

Community-focused itinerary

According to the V.I. District Court, during her visit, Justice Jackson will participate in a series of events across the territory. The itinerary includes a reception hosted by the District Court and the University of the Virgin Islands, as well as public engagements on both St. Croix and St. Thomas. She will also interact with local high school and university students and engage with members of the federal and local judiciary.
