ST. CROIX

Caribbean Writer Book Launch Party Tonight

The Caribbean Writer has launched Volume 28 of the University of the Virgin Islands’ international, refereed, literary journal with a Caribbean focus. This volume is overflowing with brilliant, insightful, imaginative writings highlighting the concepts of time, place and memories. The general public is invited to a book launch party on Wed., Oct. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Copies of the book are $25.  Career Resources Connections Expo

Transitioning high school juniors and seniors, along with out-of-school youth, guardians and stakeholders are invited to attend a career expo in recognition of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Attendees will enjoy access to valuable workforce preparation-related resources and tools, including resume preparation, job search tips, interviewing tips and more. The event takes place on Thursday, October 16 at the Juan F. Luis Cardiac Center from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. To register, visit www.vidol.gov or contact the local Voc Rehab Counselor, G.  Archaeology Day

In observance of International Archaeology Day the National Park Service invites the public to witness history in the making and get in touch with St. Croix’s rich past. The event takes place on Friday, October 17, with demonstrations of the ongoing excavations at the Christiansted National Historic Site from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. For information and scheduling school groups please visit www.nps.gov.

Limpricht Park Vintage & Collectibles Fair

The Christiansted Community Alliance invites the public to its vintage and collectibles fair. The event takes place on Saturday, October 18 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Wine Tasting - Tennis Club of St. Croix

Enjoy a fun-filled evening featuring a special wine tasting. The event takes place on Saturday, October 18 at the St. Croix Tennis Club from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 at the door for the general public. For tournament information taking place this week, please contact Tournament Directors: Michael Armendariz at [email protected] or Karen Heckman at [email protected].

 Clean Sweep Day

Join Clean Sweep Frederiksted, your friends and neighbors for Clean Sweep Day – a town-wide day of service.  Over 100 volunteers will come together to make an extraordinary difference and clear Frederiksted of trash and debris. After the clean up, volunteers are invited to a FREE volunteer party featuring live music, free lunch, and fun environmental activities. Volunteers are needed to adopt these areas. More than one area can be selected.

4th Annual Put Ur Feet in Pink for the Cure Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Event

On November 1, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. will host its 4th Annual Put Ur Feet in Pink for the Cure Breast Cancer Awareness Charity Event at Trendsetters, located behind 47th Street Jewelers Next to Sion Farm Gas Station, from 7 p.m. - until. The event is a part of the group's breast cancer awareness efforts. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased from any member of the organization. The evening includes hors d'oeuvres, music, entertainment, the famous Survivor Parade and Pink Shoe Competition. Proceeds will benefit both the American Cancer Society and YAG Foundation. ST. THOMAS

Veterans'  Lab Appointments Rescheduled

All veterans who were scheduled for lab work on Oct. 14 that was cancelled due to  Hurricane Gonzalo, the new appointment date is Thursday, October 16 at the St. Thomas CBOC. For more information, call the clinic at 774-6674 or the Office of Veterans Affairs at 774-6100.

Emergency Drill at Lockhart Elementary School

An emergency drill will be held at the school on Thursday, October 16 at 10 a.m. The school wishes to alert the public now so community members are not alarmed.

 

TERRITORY

General Meeting for all Vietnam War Veterans in the Virgin Islands

The Office of Veterans Affairs has rescheduled its planning events for the month of November and Veterans Day.  Plans are underway for the 50th Commemoration of the Vietnam War being recognized worldwide. All Vietnam War veterans are invited to attend the following meetings and other upcoming events. Family members of Vietnam Veterans are encouraged to attend with or on behalf of a loved one.

Monday, October 20, 2014 at 6:00 pm at the Patrick U. George Post #90 in Sub Base.

Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at 10:00 am at the Legislature Building in St. John (St. John meeting open to all veterans).

Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 6:00 pm at the American Legion Post #85 in Christiansted.
