ST. THOMAS -- The Department of Planning and Natural Resources gave derelict vessel owners whose boats, trailers and vehicles have been abandoned at Krum Bay, 72 hours to remove their properties from the area. Above, D.P.N.R. Commissioner Dawn Henry.
The demand comes as D.P.N.R. readies for reconstruction efforts of the Krum Bay docking facility at Parcel Nos. 158 and 160 Subbase. D.P.N.R. says the docking facility at Krum Bay, also known as the D.P.N.R. Boat Yard, has been littered with abandoned property not belonging to the government.
The government dept./agency says its investigations have also revealed that the derelict vessels pose a potential danger to the environment and to the navigation of other vessels.
Failure to commence immediate removal of private property will result in removal and disposal by D.P.N.R. at the owner’s expense, or a court judgment against the owner, D.P.N.R. said Tuesday. All operational vessels that are stored in the yard and do not belong to D.P.N.R. must also be removed no later than Friday, December 9, 2016, it added.
D.P.N.R. quoted Title 12 of the Virgin Island’s Code, Section 716 and 913 and Title 19 Section 1562, which provide for civil and criminal penalties for violation of the statutes listed in this notice.
