BVI Premier Natalio Wheatley

Premier of the British Virgin Islands Natalio Wheatley and his government will have to fend off a motion of no confidence at the sitting of the House of Assembly scheduled for Tuesday.‌

The agenda for the nineteenth sitting of the House features a motion from the Leader of the Opposition Ronnie Skelton that cites Dr. Wheatley’s multimillion-dollar error in the calculation of salaries in this year’s budget, his frequent travels that have been categorized as frivolous, and rising crime in the territory as just some of the reasons why Parliament should be dissolved and fresh elections held.

The lack of confidence in the Government of the Virgin Islands is being caused “primarily by the poor leadership and management and sheer incompetence of Premier Honorable Dr. Natalio Wheatley,” the motion reads.

Dr. Wheatley, who first assumed the role of Premier after the arrest of his predecessor Andrew Fahie, was re-elected to the post last April, after former First Lady Lorna Smith decided to caucus with the Virgin Islands Party and provide it with an outright majority.

This means that one or more members of the party led by Dr. Wheatley would have to vote along with opposition members for the no confidence motion to garner the majority it needs to pass on September 3.
