In the British Virgin Islands, a 35-year-old immigration officer, Naima Grante, has been charged with breach of trust in connection with an alleged human smuggling incident involving three Dominican Republic nationals.
The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) announced the charges against Grante on Tuesday, following her arrest over the weekend.
The three men allegedly smuggled into the territory are currently in detention. The charges against Grante come as a result of a joint investigation by the RVIPF, the Department of Immigration, and His Majesty's Customs.
This incident follows last year's charges against a former Education Minister and a secretary in the same ministry, who were accused of breaching public trust in relation to a controversial school construction project. The recent charges against Grante highlight ongoing concerns about corruption and misuse of power within the British Virgin Islands' public service sector.
