The V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue has announced an increase in the motor vehicle rental surcharge, raising the fee from $3.75 per day to $5.00 per day. The increase, enacted through a bill sponsored by Senator Angel Bolques Jr., is now in effect, with revenue directed to the general fund to support essential government services and infrastructure improvements.

BIR issued the reminder to all vehicle rental customers and businesses, making known that the new surcharge must be clearly itemized on rental statements provided to customers.

All car rental businesses operating in the territory are required to collect the updated surcharge and ensure compliance with reporting and payment deadlines. The Vehicle Rental Surcharge return must be submitted by the 30th day after the close of each month, according to BIR.

The updated rental surcharge return form is available on the BIR’s website at https://bir.vi.gov and at BIR offices across the Virgin Islands.

For further inquiries regarding the vehicle rental surcharge increase, taxpayers and rental businesses can contact the Office of Chief Counsel at (340) 715-1040.
