Pentagon Federal Credit Union has officially opened its first location in the U.S. Virgin Islands, establishing a physical presence in the territory for the first time and expanding in-person financial access for service members, Veterans, and military families.
According to the Office of Veterans Affairs in the territory, the new branch opened Tuesday, February 17 at Tutu Park Mall on St. Thomas. The opening marks what officials described as a major milestone for the territory’s military-connected community.
For years, service members and family members residing in the Virgin Islands have maintained longstanding PENFED memberships but were unable to access services in person without traveling to the mainland United States. The establishment of a local branch addresses that gap and increases financial accessibility within the territory.
The Office of Veterans Affairs stated that the new location represents progress in financial readiness, convenience, and overall support for individuals who have served the nation. Expanding access to trusted financial services locally is expected to enhance economic stability and reinforce ongoing Veteran advocacy efforts.
PENFED’s engagement with the community began immediately. The credit union announced its sponsorship of the “Armed Forces” softball team, which is comprised of Veterans and their family members and will compete in the upcoming Governmental Softball League. The sponsorship was described as an investment not only in financial services, but also in community connection and Veteran engagement.
While the opening of the St. Thomas branch is viewed as a significant advancement, officials indicated there is strong interest in expanding access further. Efforts will focus on encouraging additional PENFED service points across the territory to ensure Veterans and military families in multiple districts can access in-person services without leaving their island.
The Office of Veterans Affairs described the development as reflecting a shared commitment to ensuring that the Virgin Islands’ military community receives the same level of access and institutional support available elsewhere in the United States.
