Ocean Point Terminals has donated $140,000 to the University of the Virgin Islands' (UVI) Process Technology Program, a move coming as part of the oil storage facility's yearly commitment to bolster training, education, and workforce development programs.
"We are extremely delighted to maintain our enduring partnership with the university's Process Technology Program, a platform that prepares students for various fields in process operations," stated Jeffrey Charles, Ocean Point's chief operating officer. “We're proud to say some of our best operators and professionals are UVI program graduates, and we're happy to renew this commitment for the sixth consecutive year.”
The annual donation, received by university officials, aids the support of the process technology degree program, Ocean Point says. "With Ocean Point Terminals' support, UVI can address the territory’s requirements in process operations,” said Dr. Victoria Henry, UVI assistant professor of process technology. Graduates of this program secure successful careers with both local and international firms, as well as proceed to earn advanced degrees in various fields, including chemistry, engineering, computer science, business, and medicine.
Sauda Ali-Coureur, a UVI process technology graduate and Ocean Point Terminals employee, lauded the program for its beneficial impact. “Although some of us didn't have a mechanical inclination initially, the program equipped us with necessary skills, as well as enhanced our knowledge about manufacturing and other process operations that we utilize in our careers daily,” she said.
The collaboration with Ocean Point Terminals enables UVI to offer cutting-edge, relevant instruction in the process technology program, added Dr. Camille McKayle, Provost of UVI. "Their generous funding supports eleven courses in these areas, which greatly benefits our students. In the long run, everyone wins as industries are assured that our graduates are well trained, and graduates are ready to step into stable professions. We highly value Ocean Point Terminals' contributions and dedication to the University and this Territory," she said.
Representatives from UVI’s program faculty, current students, and Ocean Point’s Training department attended the presentation event.
