St. Croix residents grappling with the wrenching loss of a loved one now have more options when it comes to making their final arrangements to say farewell.

Under the leadership of Nikki Brooks, Kingshill Funeral Home — which is hosting its first funeral today —  recently held an open house to introduce the business to the public. “Coming home was hard because I'm starting over at 52,” she said, reflecting on the decision to return to St. Croix and open the funeral home.‌

Despite the initial daunting challenges, including a leaking roof and stained tiles, Ms. Brooks said that determination and faith propelled her forward. “I played that song, ‘The Goodness of God,’ because God didn't put me in my space to do nothing," she added.

Kingshill Funeral Home has unveiled a new range of funeral packages, starting at an accessible price point of $2,300. These packages are designed to meet the diverse needs of the community, ensuring that every family can afford a dignified service.

Located at 303 Clifton Hill in Kingshill, the funeral home offers services that blend reliability with affordability, catering to individual preferences and financial considerations.

Ms. Brooks said the funeral home prides itself on providing a seamless experience through the challenging process of arranging a funeral. The staff is dedicated to crafting each service with care and personalization, recognizing the emotional weight such moments carry for the bereaved.

Kingshill Funeral Home's commitment extends beyond standard office hours; they are open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and they also offer appointments on Sundays and 24-hour phone availability to accommodate families' needs during urgent times.

According to Ms. Brooks said the service aims to offer a space where families can celebrate the lives of their loved ones in a personalized and meaningful way. “I believe in celebrating the life of the loved one. That’s why when you walk around here, it’s a blank canvas. What do you desire for your loved one? We created it this way so that every human lived a life,” she explained.

Ms. Brooks emphasized the practicality of pre-planning funerals just as we do birthdays or trips, pointing out the inevitability of one's own funeral. She argues that pre-planning not only allows individuals to organize the funeral to their preferences, but it also alleviates financial strain and reduces stress for surviving family members.

‌Kingdom Funeral Home is also making efforts to ensure that all are accommodated, with bilingual services and other materials available. “Everything we have in English, we have in Spanish, even to the contract, so the community can read along [with] what everyone is saying," she said.

She also highlighted the ecumenical nature of her service offerings. “Some people can have many denominations…some people are more spiritual,” she noted, saying that she wanted to be able to help mourners “create what they need for their loved one to celebrate them."‌

Ms. Brooks reiterated her belief that the new funeral home will offer those struggling through one of the most difficult periods of life ease, comfort, and valuable assistance in making final arrangements for their departed loved one.
