The 2022 Economic Census is underway, says the VI Bureau of Economic Research (VIBER).

The census, conducted every five years, compiles “detailed information on the structure and functioning of the economy, including data on the number of businesses, the types of products and services they offer, and the number of employees,” according to a media release from the Bureau.

B.E.R. says this is a complete census, so every business with employees on payroll for 2022 has a legal requirement to respond, under Title 13 USC Section 224. “The census is mandatory for all employer businesses and requires them to provide information on their operations, finances, and workforce,” the press release reads. A letter will be sent to those businesses with instructions on how to report - options include online questionnaires, mail-in forms, and telephone interviews.

The data submitted to B.E.R. is governed by strict federal laws, the Bureau assured, committing to safeguarding the confidentiality of the information gathered. Results of the census will be published later this year, and will prove a “valuable resource for business, researchers, and policymakers looking to understand the economy and make informed decisions,” B.E.R. says.

“The Bureau of Economic Research remains hard at work to fulfill and exceed our mandates and we are excited to share the results of the census once completed," said Allison DeGazon, BER director. "We are a small agency, but the expertise that every member of the team brings to the table is admirable, and we are committed to a completely data-driven approach to fully understanding our economy."
