Woman Dies After Being Struck by Postal Service Vehicle in St. Thomas

ST. THOMAS — A woman succumbed to injuries after she was struck by a U.S. Postal Service vehicle in St. Thomas Monday morning, the Consortium has learned. V.I.P.D. Director of Communications Glen Dratte later corroborated the information.

According to the V.I.P.D., officers were dispatched to the scene of the incident, which occurred near Berne’s Alley in the area of Discount Travel, and found emergency medical technicians providing care to the victim.

Mr. Dratte said a preliminary investigation by the Traffic Investigation Bureau revealed that the victim, a 69-year-old female who has not been identified by next of kin, was walking southward from the Berne’s Alley in the area of Discount Travel when the postal van was reversing southward. The operator of the van reversed and struck the victim and drove over her body, according to the police report. She succumbed to the injuries sustained.

The Traffic Investigation Bureau is in the process of investigating this fatal incident, the V.I.P.D. said.
