First responders on scene at Point Udall following incident on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2021 that left a tourist dead. By. JOE HOLLINS
ST. CROIX — A tourist was pronounced dead by emergency medical technicians Thursday night at Point Udall after climbing over a retaining wall that encircles the monument, climbing down the steep hill and being knocked off balance by a wave and into the rough seas.
That's according to the 911 Emergency Call Center, which reported that the male victim was pronounced dead at about 7:15 p.m. The original 911 call about the incident came in at about 6:44 p.m.
EMS personnel and other first responders immediately responded to the scene. V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima said he did not have any information about the victim. It was also not clear whether the victim died after falling on rocks, or drowned as a result of sustaining injuries before falling into the water. The 911 Emergency Call Center did say that the victim was lying face down in the water.
Videos of the incident obtained by the Consortium (courtesy Joe Hollins) show multiple first responder agencies on the scene, among them the V.I. Fire Service, EMS and the V.I.P.D.
