ST. CROIX — The V.I. Police Department on Tuesday announced that a single vehicle accident on Monday which resulted in the death of an 85-year-old man was the result of a medical condition.

On Monday at approximately 5:33 p.m., the V.I.P.D.'s Traffic Investigation Bureau was notified by the 911 Emergency Call Center to travel to Estate Clifton Hill in the vicinity of the Solar Panels (Route 663), to investigate a one-vehicle collision that occurred on the shoulder of the northbound lane.

Upon officers' arrival to the scene, they observed the body of a male, later identified as 85- years-old Kenneth A. Andrews, lying on the ground approximately 70 feet east of the collision.

A preliminary investigation guided by the evidence at the scene indicated that Andrews left the Diageo area and was operating his vehicle from south to north through the intersection when a medical emergency occurred.

The evidence further indicated that Andrews, due to a critical medical emergency, lost control of his vehicle and collided into a fence and a tree located on the shoulder of the northbound lane at a residence in Estate Profit.

Approximately three men who were in the area of the collision quickly responded and removed Andrews from his vehicle and placed him in an open, grassy area so he may receive medical treatment, the V.I.P.D. said.

Though there was no evidence to indicate that Andrews sustained any injuries as a result of the collision, he later died on Tuesday.

The V.I.P.D. says the case remains open and under investigation by the Traffic Investigation Bureau, St. Croix District.
