Single-Vehicle Accident on Melvin Evans Highway Leaves 34-Year-Old Man Dead

ST. CROIX — A single-vehicle accident on Melvin H. Evans Highway and the East Airport Road intersection has resulted in the death of the 34-year-old man, the V.I. Police Department announced Saturday.

V.I.P.D. Director of Communications, Glen Dratte, said that during the wee hours of Saturday morning — about 2:37 a.m. — a concerned resident reported the accident to the 911 Emergency Call Center. The caller stated that there was a man trapped inside the vehicle, and 911 immediately notified the V.I.P.D., St. Croix Rescue, the V.I. Fire Service, and the Emergency Medical Services.

According to the police department, a preliminary investigation revealed that a white 1997 Ford Escort was traveling from east to west on the Melvin H. Evans Highway at a high rate of speed. As the vehicle approached the intersection at the highway and East Airport Road, the driver lost control of his vehicle, veered off the roadway and collided into the traffic light pole on the Southwestern shoulder of the roadway. The pole was deeply embedded inside the vehicle from the impact, the police investigation revealed. The driver was wearing his seat belt. 

Emergency Medical Technicians did not find any vital signs, and the driver was pronounced dead on the scene as a result of injuries he sustained during the crash.

The driver was identified as 34-year-old Angel Espinosa by a family member.  

This case has been assigned to the Traffic Investigations Bureau and remains open and under investigation.
