ST. JOHN — A single-car accident Tuesday morning in St. John led to the death of a male victim, according to the V.I. Police Department.

STJ Rescue Service personnel at about 10:49 a.m. reported the accident to emergency services after discovering the scene.

The victim, identified as Akil Gumbs, a 41-year-old man, was found unresponsive on the road and subsequently pronounced dead at the scene. Gumbs was identified by a family member later in the day.

Local law enforcement from the Jurgen Command Units and Traffic Investigation Bureau were quick to respond to the scene, the VIPD said. A preliminary investigation revealed that Gumbs was operating a red Jeep Liberty and was traveling eastward towards Coral Bay when the incident occurred.

The vehicle reportedly veered off to the left side of Centerline Road, colliding into an embankment. This collision resulted in the vehicle rolling over several times and led to the ejection of the driver through the vehicle's window. The Jeep Liberty ultimately came to rest on its wheels, sustaining major damage in the process.

The cause of the fatal accident is still being investigated, the VIPD said. Authorities have not yet released information regarding the possible causes of the accident. The investigation will look into various factors, including road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and driver conditions at the time of the incident.

Updates on the ongoing investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.
