Scene of fatal accident in the Havensight area on Friday, May 29, 2023.

ST. THOMAS — In a tragic turn of events in Havensight on Friday, a medical emergency behind the wheel resulted in a fatal accident, the V.I. Police Department has confirmed to the Consortium.

The VIPD said that at 1:19 p.m. Friday, a vigilant citizen reported a man having a seizure while driving his truck. Emergency Medical Services and the VIPD's Traffic Bureau promptly arrived at the scene following the distress call. They found a black male, later identified as James Bryan, 55, receiving medical attention. Bryan, who had been operating his Ford F-150 truck at the time of the incident, reportedly suffered a seizure that led to a collision.

Preliminary investigations into the incident revealed that Bryan's seizure caused him to lose control of his vehicle, leading to an unfortunate chain reaction. His truck collided with a nearby golf cart, which in turn hit another truck.

Bryan was swiftly transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center in critical condition. However, despite the best efforts of the medical team, he passed away.

The VIPD's Traffic Bureau has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident to understand the full sequence of events and to ascertain if any other factors contributed to the accident. Further updates will be shared as the investigation progresses.
