ST. JOHN — A man from Florida on vacation with his family in St. John was recovered by family members unresponsive at Trunk Bay, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced.

According to the V.I.P.D. news release, on January 4 at about 5:38 p.m., officers were dispatched to Trunk Bay Beach in reference to a possible drowning. Emergency Medical Technicians responded to the scene and performed CPR on a Caucasian male and concluded he was deceased.

The victim was identified by family members as 47-year-old Nathaniel Outcalt of Venice, Florida.

Police were told that Outcalt, who was on vacation, went snorkeling with his family. After a short period of snorkeling, a family member noticed Outcalt floating motionless in the water, swam out, and pulled him to shore. The 911 Emergency Call Center was called as bystanders assisted with CPR until an emergency response team arrived, Mr. Derima said.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing, according to police. VIPD Tourism officers and officials from the VI Department of Tourism were working with the victim’s family to assist them during this time.
