Rollover Accident Leads to Death of Man After Boom Truck Loses Balance on Moravian Highway in St. Thomas

A boom truck, also known as an aerial work platform, fell on its side after losing balance on the Moravian Highway near the Veterans Affairs building in St. Thomas, according to police. By. THE VIRGIN ISLANDS POLICE DEPARTMENT

ST. THOMAS — A man was pronounced dead on Saturday while another was in stable condition at the Schneider Regional Medical Center after a boom truck (aerial work platform) fell on its side when it lost balance on the Moravian Highway near the Veterans Affairs building in St. Thomas, the V.I.P.D. has confirmed to the Consortium.

According to V.I.P.D. Director of Communications Glen Dratte, citing a police report, the 911 Emergency Call Center received notification of the incident at about 8:37 a.m.

Traffic investigators were on scene probing the matter, which has been classified as an "accidental incident," according to Traffic Commander in St. Thomas, Captain Roslyn Jarvis. 

Emergency Medical Technicians worked to resuscitate the now-deceased victim while on the scene and managed to keep him alive until arrival at the hospital," said Captain Jarvis. However, best efforts to save him were unsuccessful. The surviving victim suffered a broken leg along with other minor injuries.

The victim has been identified as Rafael Urena, age 51 by next of kin, according to the V.I.P.D. The incident is being investigated by the V.I.P.D.'s Traffic Investigation Bureau.
