Update:  The Gallows Bay Marine Facility has officially reopened as of 3:30 p.m. Monday, following a temporary closure earlier in the day prompted by a gas tank accident on the dock.

Original Story: Operations at the Gallows Bay Port Facility in Christiansted were abruptly suspended Monday morning after an incident involving a gas tank on the Water Spirit vessel, prompting emergency response and safety concerns. The closure, announced by V.I. Port Authority Acting Executive Director Bill Rawlins, was implemented as a precautionary measure.

Rawlins confirmed that the incident led to immediate operational delays at the facility and triggered an on-site inspection. Following those inspections, officials decided to evacuate the port and suspend all activity until further notice.

In response to the event, multiple agencies, including VIPA, Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services, and the U.S. Coast Guard, were dispatched to assess the situation and ensure the safety of personnel and the surrounding area.

The timeline for resuming operations at the Gallows Bay Port remains uncertain as safety evaluations and coordination among agencies are ongoing.
