Honda CRV that hit three victims Sunday morning on St. Croix By. Surveillance video footage

ST. CROIX — A freak accident on St. Croix in Christiansted Sunday morning left three victims injured, according to footage of the accident gleaned by the Consortium. A V.I.P.D. release issued late Sunday identified the victims as a 27-year-old man and two 6-year-old boys.

V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima said officers were dispatched near the corner of King Street and Smith Street, downtown Christiansted at about 11:06 a.m. Sunday to investigate an auto accident involving pedestrians.

On the scene, officers observed a 27-year-old male and two 6-year-old males on the ground, a vehicle that collided into a building in the area, and another vehicle that was involved in the accident, Mr. Derima said.

According to the news release, a preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a silver 2005 Honda CRV, heading west on King Street, made a right turn onto Smith Street. The Honda CRV then hit a white 2002 Toyota Echo that was parked on Smith Street, struck the three pedestrians, and collided into the building, coming to a stop.

The three pedestrians were transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital via ambulance for treatment of various injuries about their bodies, Mr. Derima said.

It was not clear what caused the vehicle to accelerate when it was supposed to stop. Footage of the incident indicate that the driver accelerated and hit the three victims at a high rate of speed when he was supposed de-accelerate. Mr. Derima said the incident is under investigation by officers of the Ancilmo Marshall Command, with assistance from the Traffic Investigation Bureau, according to police.
