ST. JOHN — A firefighter has died in the line of duty while returning from training, the V.I. Fire Service announced Monday.
"It is with deep sadness that the Virgin Islands Fire Service announces the death of a firefighter in the line of duty," stated V.I.F.S. in the release. "While returning to their duty station after training, two firefighters were involved in a motor vehicle accident on St. John that tragically took the life of one of the firefighters and injured the other."
The incident occurred on Monday around midday. The other firefighter has been hospitalized, according to Richard Motta, Gov't House communications director.
VIFS said it will brief the public as more details become available.
The name of the fallen firefighter is being withheld until next of kin is notified, according to the release.
