Scene of vehicular accident on Tuesday, June 6 on St. Croix that left 66-year-old Luis A. Viera dead.
ST. CROIX — An auto collision that took place near the intersection of the Melvin H. Evans Highway (Route 66) and Hope Road (Route 68) has led to the death of one of the drivers involved, according the V.I. Police Department's Traffic Investigation Bureau.
The crash, which involved a grey Mercedes-Benz E-350 and a white Chevy Silverado, occurred on the afternoon of June 6, at approximately 4:36 p.m. The entire Traffic Investigation Bureau was immediately notified, with all available officers dispatched to the scene for initial assessments and to process evidence, according to the V.I.P.D.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the Mercedes-Benz, moving westbound on Melvin H. Evans Highway near Home Depot, collided with the Chevy Silverado. The Chevy was reportedly moving eastbound and was attempting to turn right, heading south towards Hope Road, when the accident occurred.
Emergency medical services were dispatched to the scene, and all three individuals involved in the crash were swiftly transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital for immediate medical attention.
The driver of the Chevy Silverado, identified as Luis A. Viera, 66, later succumbed to his injuries sustained in the collision. Viera was positively identified by a family member at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Viera’s passenger and the driver of the Mercedes-Benz did not sustain life-threatening injuries.
An autopsy will be performed on Viera to officially determine the cause of his death.
The incident is still under active investigation by the VIPD Traffic Investigation Bureau, St. Croix District, as officers work to piece together the full circumstances leading up to this fatal collision.
The bureau is encouraging anyone with further information regarding this accident to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
