Brewer's Beach, St. Thomas

ST. THOMAS — An elderly man reported missing Sunday was found dead on a beach in St. Thomas early Monday.

According to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima, on Sunday at roughly 5:17 p.m., 62-year-old Roy A. Frett was reported missing by family members. Frett was last seen on January 10 at around 3:15 p.m. taking a swim at John Brewer’s Beach. Officers from the VIPD, Department of Planning and Natural Resources, the U. S. Coast Guard, St. Thomas Rescue, University of the Virgin Islands Security and the Virgin Islands Fire Service conducted a search of the area for Frett with negative results. The search was suspended at nightfall and resumed at around 6 a.m. on January 11.

At approximately 7:15 a.m. Monday, St. Thomas Rescue personnel located an unresponsive Black male floating in the water at the eastern end of John Brewer’s Beach. The male was removed from the water and Emergency Medical Technicians on the scene confirmed that he did not have any signs of life. The male was identified by next of kin as Frett.

The cause of death was unknown pending an autopsy, said Mr. Derima. The investigation into the incident was ongoing.
