Oleanvine and Kadeem Maynard
Originally scheduled for Monday, August 21, sentencing hearings for mother-and-son duo Oleanvine and Kadeem Maynard, who both pleaded guilty to being part of a cocaine-trafficking conspiracy with former British Virgin Islands Premier Andrew Fahie, have been postponed by Judge Kathleen Williams.
Last Thursday, the docket for the case was updated with information that Oleanvine Maynard’s hearing would now be held on January 18, while the following day, Kadeem’s hearing was canceled due to a scheduling conflict. Judge Williams will issue a new date at some point in the future.
The former managing director of the BVI Ports Authority has also had her pre-sentence investigation report submitted. Her son challenged the recommendations arising from his report, claiming that he deserved to be considered for a sentence much shorter than the recommended range because of his relatively minor role in the conspiracy, among other factors.
It is not yet known whether the elder Maynard will also challenge her sentencing recommendations.
Meanwhile, Oleanvine Maynard’s friends and relatives have written letters to Judge Williams asking for leniency. In them, she is praised for her “dedication to being a hard-working, devoted mother.” A friend who housed Ms. Maynard during her time spent studying in the USVI wrote that “to her detriment at times, she is very trusting,” and said that she had “a rare heart for people and service.” Two of Ms. Maynard’s nephews described her generosity towards family and her compassionate nature.
Her daughter characterized her mother’s actions as borne “of desperation and not of pure intent,” saying that financial difficulties prior to Ms. Maynard’s appointment as head of the ports in 2021 had put the family home in jeopardy.
With Kadeem Maynard’s sentencing pending a new date and Oleanvine Maynard’s hearing pushed to January 18, 2024, the pair who pleaded guilty may not learn their fates until after the trial of their accused co-conspirator Andrew Fahie, who has maintained his innocence. His trial is scheduled to begin on January 8, 2024.
