ST. THOMAS — The body of a man was removed from the sea near a restaurant in Frenchtown, the V.I. Police Department has announced.
According to V.I.P.D. Director of Communications Glen Dratte, today at 7:21 a.m. a concerned resident called the 911 Emergency Call Center to report the sighting of a body floating in the water in the vicinity of the Oceana Restaurant in Frenchtown.
Officers from the Richard N. Callwood Command traveled to the area and confirmed that the body of a black male was floating in the water. Officers, along with the assistance of St. Thomas Rescue, the V.I. Port Authority and V.I. Water and Power Authority personnel removed the body from the water, according to the police department.
The victim was identified by next of kin at 11:59 a.m. as 67-year-old Washington Williams.
Detectives who were on scene saw no signs of foul play, according to the V.I.P.D. The cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.
