BREAKING: Attorney General Soraya Diase-Coffelt Resigns

Breaking News / Business / Caribbean / Featured / Government / News / Politics / Virgin Islands / January 15, 2015

Soraya Diase-Coffelt has resigned her post as Virgin Islands Attorney General, two weeks after being appointed to the position by Governor Kenneth Mapp.

According to a press release issued late Thursday by Government House, Diase-Coffelt cited among reasons for resigning, “a staffing conflict with personnel assembled by the administration.”

In accepting the Attorney General’s resignation, Governor Mapp said, “It is indeed unfortunate that we were unable to resolve the staffing personnel issues prior to this resignation. I wish Ms. Diase-Coffelt well in her future endeavors.”

In light of Diase-Coffelt’s departure from the administration, Governor Mapp pointed out that there would not be a break in the Virgin Islands’ Government’s litigation matters with HOVENSA, which was announced at a press conference on Thursday morning. The governor expressed his “full faith” in Chief Legal Counsel Emile Henderson III to continue the process, and stated that the matter would proceed as planned.

Diase-Coffelt was announced as the territory’s Attorney General on Dec. 30, 2014.

This story will be updated as more details become available.
