ST. THOMAS — A man who was found shot in the Subbase area of St. Thomas early Wednesday morning has died, according to the V.I. Police Department.

The victim has been identified as Shemar Coward, who succumbed to his injuries on September 4. The case is now being treated as a homicide and is under active investigation by the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB).

According to the VIPD, the 911 Emergency Call Center received reports of multiple gunshots in the Subbase area at approximately 2:11 a.m. Patrol officers were quickly dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival and an initial inspection, they discovered Coward suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was immediately transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center by ambulance, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Coward was identified as one of two persons of interest in the incident at Havensight Mall on Dec. 4, 2021 where a gunpoint robbery left two individuals critically wounded. The incident rocked St. Thomas, and one of the victims eventually died while in the state of Connecticut.

Two men were later arrested in connection with the brazen and violent crime. The VIPD identified them as Jaquin Phipps and Demoi Barrow. According to court documents, charges against Mr. Phipps were later dismissed.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau has taken over the case and is conducting an investigation into the incident. Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that may assist in solving this violent crime.
